This article provides a narrative review of empirical studies related to health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and eating disorders and to report recent changes in the measurement of HRQOL in eating disorders.

Scott Engel, Ph.D., is a Research Scientist at the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute. He also is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Engel received his doctoral degree from North Dakota State University in 2003 and worked at the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute as a post-doctoral fellow from 2003-2004.
Dr. Engel’s research interests revolve primarily around new and innovative means of assessing eating disorder and obese patients. He is particularly interested in the use of ecological momentary assessment (EMA), which assesses research participants in “real-time” and in their natural environment. Dr. Engel has been involved in a number of EMA studies investigating mood, stress, and other variables that impact various eating and eating disorder behaviors. Finally, other areas of research that interest Dr. Engel are health-related quality of life and emotion in eating disorders.
