After Incarceration: A Guide to Helping Women Reenter the Community

About the Course:

Women who are recently released from incarceration face challenges for thriving in communities (e.g. safety, employment, maintaining social support). Several of these challenges are based in cultural and gender factors specific to women – particularly, women of color. This publication authored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration provides information on the nature of challenges for recently-incarcerated women and strategies for addressing each of these challenges.

This course is based on the article, After Incarceration: A Guide to Helping Women Reenter the Community created by SAMHSA in 2020.

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.

  1. To identify several considerations that may challenge recently-incarcerated women’s success in communities

  2. To identify the cultural and socioeconomic factors that can contribute to each consideration challenging long-term success in residence in communities

  3. To describe several concrete strategies for helping recently-incarcerated women to overcome barriers to success in communities and strategies for building effective self-care
