Substance Abuse Assessment: Why, How, and What Do You Do With It?

This webinar is one in a series of educational videos for professionals presented by the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence as part of the Integrative Services Project. This course discusses why substance abuse assessment is a critical component of advocacy; describes how and when to do basic substance use screening in a trauma-informed manner; and identifies how to incorporate information gained from a client into your advocacy toward their personal goals.

This course is based on the article, Substance Abuse Assessment: Why, How, and What Do You Do With It? created by Silvia Benitez, et al. in 2017.

Silvia Benitez-Richards has worked with the ISPIA, as a liaison and trainer for Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault agencies around rural Iowa and as a Substance Abuse Counselor for Youth and Shelter Services (YSS) in Ames and Marshalltown, IA. Silvia started as a Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Advocate from 2008-2013 with Waypoint Services, and continue her education as a Drug/Alcohol Abuse and Dependence Outpatient Counselor for the Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC)

Anna Hollis, Ph.D., NCSP, is a nationally certified School Psychologist, currently practicing in Detroit, Michigan. She is licensed as a psychologist and certified as a school psychologist to practice in 2 states (Michigan and South Carolina). She is a member of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP); the Michigan Association of School Psychologists (MASP); and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS). Dr. Hollis obtained her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina. Her professional interests include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Positive Psychology; Trauma-Informed Practice; and Urban School Psychology.
