About the Course

This course provides an update to the comprehensive review that was published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease in 2010. It provides a review of the evidence for several recommendations that were made in the previous review and offers practical advice about behavior-change techniques to help patients adopt brain-healthy behaviors.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Promoting Successful Cognitive Aging created by Taylor J. Krivanek (medical student) et al. in 2021.

Taylor J. Krivanek

Taylor J. Krivanek is a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School with research experience in cognitive and behavioral science, health literacy, and medical education.

Seth A. Gale, MD

Seth Gale, MD, is a behavioral neurologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gale’s research interest is in lifestyle and non-pharmacologic interventions, including the use of mobile health and other technologies, to promote brain health and reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive decline. He is also interested in clinical ethics, philosophy of medicine, and the optimization of cognitive assessment in clinical practice. Dr. Gale works as an investigator on multiple studies in Alzheimer disease at the Center for Alzheimer Research and Treatment (CART) at BWH.

Elizabeth Mosco, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in Reno, NV. She opened a private practice after 10 years of conducting home-based assessment and therapy with the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System. Dr. Mosco’s clinical interests include maternal mental health, older adults, and third wave cognitive behavioral therapies.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Define dementia and mild cognitive impairment.
  2. Discuss the impact of dementia on the health care system.
  3. List at least 5 modifiable risk factors for dementia.
  4. List 2 behavioral change strategies to help individuals reduce modifiable risks for dementia.
