Men’s mental health promotion includes some challenges related to gender-related barriers and stigmas. This is a quantitative study focused on men’s perceptions of mental health and preferences for mental heath promotion. The article proposes several directions for men’s community-based mental health promotion and opportunities for how masculinity may be expanded to promote mental health values.

Paul Sharp, PhD (Philosophy)
Paul has worked as a Research Assistant and Research Coordinator where his team designed, implemented, and evaluated health promotion interventions targeted at smoking cessation, weight loss, physical activity, and healthy eating. He also worked for several years in the public sector with homelessness and neighborhood development, which helped him see the importance of applied research and translating evidence into practice. He has had multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.
Joan L. Bottorff, PhD (Nursing)
Dr. Bottorff is one of Canada’s leading scientists in the field of health behaviour. She is Professor and Chair in Health Promotion and Cancer Prevention at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus, and was also the recipient of a UBC Distinguished University Scholar Award. Her research program focuses on development of gender-sensitive interventions to promote health. She has published more than 200 works in peer reviewed journals.
Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.
