This course examines Mindfulness-based interventions in the treatment of substance use disorders, using mindfulness techniques to address behavior change in addictive behavior. It includes: Mindfulness-based relapse prevention (MBRP), mechanisms of behavior change, Mindfulness oriented recovery enhancement (MORE), Mindful awareness in body-oriented therapy (MABT), Mindfulness training for smoking cessation (MTS), and Moment-by-moment in Women’s recovery (MMWR). An overview of the protocol for each approach is given, as well as a literature review.
This course is based on the reading-based online, Mindfulness-based programs for substance use disorders-a systematic review of manualized treatments created by J. Richard Korecki, B. S. and Frank J. Schwebel, PhD in 2020.

J. Richard Korecki, is a research assistant and site coordinator at the Department of Psychology, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM. His research interests focus on health and resilience among high-stress occupations (i.e. military, law enforcement, and first responders), mindfulness based interventions for stress and performance , mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) for substance use and psychosocial factors that impact resilience and thriving in the face of difficulty. He has had two articles published in peer reviewed journals.
Frank J. Schwebel, PhD
Dr. Frank Schwebel is a postdoctoral fellow at the Center on Alcohol, Substance use, And Addictions at the University of New Mexico. His research interests focus on the use of technology to support addictive-behavior change. In his clinical work, Dr. Schwebel has experience and training in a wide range of evidence-based treatments including mindfulness-based relapse prevention, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive processing therapy, prolonged exposure, and dialectical behavior therapy. His work has been published in mutliple peer reviewed journals.
