About the Course

This course is based on the book of the same title. Using the APA Guidelines for Psychological Practice With Older Adults and the Pikes Peak Model for Training in Professional Geropsychology, this material shows mental health providers how to expand their practice in order to treat older adults. Chapters describe tools and techniques for assessing and treating common conditions that practitioners encounter when working with older adults, including depression, anxiety, cognitive impairment, and prescription drug misuse. Clinical case examples demonstrate how to deliver interventions while avoiding common interactional pitfalls.

Gregory A. Hinrichsen, Ph.D., ABPP is an associate clinical professor in the Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he provides mental health services to older adults in primary care, teaches, and supervises. He is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Counseling and Clinical Psychology, Teachers College, Columbia University, where he teaches and collaborates on interpersonal psychotherapy, global mental health, and military veteran research studies. Dr. Hinrichsen has been working in the field of geropsychology for 40 years. He has held leadership positions in geropsychology professional organizations, and received the Award for the Advancement of Psychology and Aging from the American Psychological Association (APA) Committee on Aging. Over his 40-year career, he has also directed psychology internship and geropsychology fellowship programs, and contributed to public policy.

Elizabeth Mosco, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in Reno, NV. She opened a private practice after 10 years of conducting home-based assessment and therapy with the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System. Dr. Mosco’s clinical interests include maternal mental health, older adults, and third wave cognitive behavioral therapies.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Recognize stereotypes and myths regarding older adults and how they can influence care provision.
  2. Describe the lifespan developmental perspective and cite examples of the biological, mental, emotional, personality, and social changes associated with aging.
  3. Summarize the ways in which an assessment with an older adult may need to differ from an assessment with a younger adult.
  4. List common life problems often a focus of psychotherapeutic treatment with older adults and effective treatment approaches with this population.
  5. Describe how depression and anxiety manifest in older adults and compare assessment instruments available to help diagnose each condition.
  6. Summarize the symptoms of the four major causes of dementia, list assessment instruments available to screen for cognitive impairment, and identify possible treatment targets for individuals with dementia or their caregivers.
  7. Summarize the prevalence of, factors associated with, consequences of, assessment instruments available to screen, and treatment prognosis for older adults with alcohol and substance abuse, including prescription drug misuse.
