About the Course:
This course examines the effects of Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) vs Treatment As Usual (TAU) on parent substance use and adolescent substance use. The authors used effectiveness research to determine the root cause of BSFT outcomes. They measured parent substance use, adolescent substance use, family functioning, and adolescent psychiatric co-morbidity. They tested the following hypotheses: Hypothesis 1: BSFT would be more effective than TAU in reducing parental substance use, Hypothesis 2: Treatment effect on substance use would be likely mediated by improvements in family functioning, Hypothesis 3: Adolescents whose parents used substances were more likely to use drugs, and might be more difficult to treat, and Hypothesis 4: Reductions in parent substance use would be associated with reductions in adolescent substance use.
This course is based on the reading-based online article, The Effects of Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) on Parent Substance Use and the Association Between Parent and Adolescent Substance Use created by Viviana E. Horigian, M.D, Daniel J. Feaster, Ph.D, and Ahnalee Brincks, Ph.D in 2015.
