This course examines the opioid epidemic and its impact on the Black/African American community. This population has a disproportionate overdose rate for a specific type of opioid. A one-sized fits all approach is not recommended. A culturally specific terminate that has Black/African Americans as counselors and peer recovery specialist is a way to better engage the community. In addition to adapting current treatment to cultural specifics within the community, this report includes: an overview of the national data, routes to opioid misuse and overdose deaths; challenges to prevention, treatment, and recovery; strategies to address opioid misuse and OUD in Black/African American communities; and standard treatment, and community informed strategies.

Victoria B. Chau is a faculty member in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH). She collaborates with diverse organizations including UN agencies, USAID, and academic partners to conduct analyses using modeling approaches to guide evaluation and program planning. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
