Research-Based, Clinically Sensitive Mindfulness-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy With Children and Adolescents

About the Course:

This course explains how to conduct cognitive-behavioral interventions that include significant components of mindfulness work. There is instruction in conducting a variety of mindfulness exercises that are age-appropriate for youth of different ages; these exercises are not stand-alone interventions but can be integrated into most kinds of therapy. Most of the course consists of instruction in the theory and implementation of two major treatment packages: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). While this amount of education would not make you a DBT or ACT specialist, the course explains the research on which these interventions are based and would equip you to conduct the fundamental DBT and ACT strategies with children and adolescents. There are numerous clinical illustrations and examples of words that clinicians can say to communicate important ideas and accomplish therapeutic objectives.

Jeremy P. Shapiro, Ph.D., a clinical child psychologist and adjunct faculty member of the Psychological Sciences Department of Case Western Reserve University, has 30+ years of experience as a psychotherapist, researcher, and trainer. Dr. Shapiro has published 7 books and numerous articles on topics including child abuse, depression, youth violence prevention, psychotherapy methods, and naturalistic outcome research, and he has presented over 200 workshops to therapists in over 40 states. From the beginning, the central focus of Dr. Shapiro's career has been integrating scientific findings with clinical reasoning to develop effective, practical strategies for helping clients.
