Chapter 6 covers substance abuse among specific population groups and settings. TIP 51 is an in-depth guide that assists providers in offering screening, assessment, and treatment to women living with substance use disorders. This guide reviews gender-specific research and best practices, such as common patterns of initial use and specific treatment issues and strategies to utilize when working with women who use/abuse substances. Specific recommendations are provided to assist clinicians and administrators in developing and maintaining trauma-informed therapeutic healing programs designed to meet the specific needs of female clients.

Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs) are developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Each TIP involves the development of topic-specific best-practice guidelines for the prevention and treatment of substance use and mental disorders. TIPs draw on the experience and knowledge of clinical, research, and administrative experts of various forms of treatment and prevention. TIPs are distributed to facilities and individuals across the country. Published TIPs can be accessed at http://store.samhsa.gov.

Anna Hollis, Ph.D., NCSP, is a nationally certified school psychologist currently living near Detroit, Michigan. She is licensed as a psychologist in 2 states (Michigan and South Carolina) and certified as a school psychologist in in 5 states (South Carolina, Michigan, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Maryland). She is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA); the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP); the Michigan Association of School Psychologists (MASP); and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS). Dr. Hollis obtained her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina. Her professional interests include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Positive Psychology; Trauma-Informed Practice; and Urban School Psychology.
This course is recommended for all behavioral/mental health professionals who are seeking additional knowledge about the prevention and treatment of substance use/misuse/addiction, particularly as these topics impact women. This course is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

Identify and discuss the critical racial and ethnic disparities in health that result in different outcomes or consequences for some groups.
Describe and discuss the available substance-related research for women in specific racial and ethnic groups, settings, and special populations in the United States across four domains: demographics, substance abuse patterns, clinical treatment issues, and resiliency factors.
