Engaging Men in Psychological Treatment-A Scoping Review

About the Course:

This course examines the need to engage men in psychotherapy and improve help-seeking, given low treatment engagement and high rates of suicide. It explores: clarifying structure, building rapport and a collaborative relationship, and tailoring language, re-examining masculinity, gender and gender-bias.

Zac E. Seidler, MCP

Zac Seidler is a Registered Psychologist, the Director of Health Professional Training at Movember Foundation and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Orygen, The Centre for Excellence in Youth Mental Health at The University of Melbourne. Zac has devoted the past 5 years to the goal of reducing the staggering male suicide rate, treating and researching men’s mental health. Zac has worked clinically with men of different ages and presentations from adolescents in Darwin with early psychosis to older HIV+ men struggling with adjustment. Currently, Zac is creating the world’s first online program to train mental health practitioners in how to better understand and respond to men’s distress.

Simon M. Rice, PhD

Dr. Simon Rice is an NHMRC Career Development Fellow and Clinical Psychologist with Orygen, The National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health, at The University of Melbourne. He leads Orygen’s Young Men’s Mental Health program. Simon has a joint clinical and research interest in the social determinants of men’s mental health in addition to e-mental health interventions, suicide prevention, treatment innovation of moderate-severe mood disorders in young people and elite athlete mental health. He is a member of the International Olympic Committee’s Expert Consensus Panel on Mental Health in Elite Athletes, and a Scientific Advisory Group Member for Australia’s landmark longitudinal men’s health study – Ten to Men.

John S. Ogrodniczuk, PhD

Dr. John Ogrodniczuk is a Professor and Director of the UBC Psychotherapy Program, North America’s 2nd largest medically based psychotherapy training program. His psychotherapy research program examines relationships among pre-therapy characteristics of patients, therapy process patterns believed to mediate change, and multivariate outcomes. His research has involved a variety of psychotherapies and patient populations. He has a particular interest in studying psychodynamic psychotherapy, personality disorders, group psychotherapy, alexithymia, and men’s mental health. Dr. Ogrodniczuk has held several grants to support his research and has published extensively.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
