About the Course:

This research intensive course examines various aspects of treatment in racial and ethnic groups and sexual minorities. Evidence-based practices were used to study alcohol use, abuse, and dependence in ethnic minorities. Point of sale intervention, family intervention, computer technology, cultural traditions, culturally grounded intervention, prevention, were all studied for various groups. Alcohol research in American Indians was highlighted. Race and ethnicity as well as sexual minority does play a role in which treatment is effective for each group, and group subsets.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Culturally Competent Prevention and Treatment created by Erick G Guerrero, PhD., Bryan R. Garner, Ph.D., and Arthur Blume, PhD. in 2016.

Erick G Guerrero, PhD.
Erick Guerrero earned his PhD in social work in management at the University of Chicago, focusing his dissertation on organizational components that could be modified to implement culturally responsive practices in the nation’s outpatient substance abuse treatment field, one of the few studies of its kind. After six years at USC, he was awarded tenure as an Associate Professor. Guerrero has expanded the scope of his research studies to implementation of evidence-based practices in different health care settings. Guerrero’s overall focus on implementation drivers, such as leadership and financial mechanisms to improve quality of care services for low-income Latinos and other vulnerable populations. Guerrero has been able to provide his students with opportunities to conduct meaningful field work. Under his mentorship, students have traveled to service organizations across the nation and interview key administrators, giving them an opportunity to both understand new research methodologies and become acquainted with real-world practice.
Bryan R. Garner, Ph.D.
Dr. Bryan Garner is currently a senior implementation research scientist in RTI International’s Behavioral Health Research Division. Between 2002 and 2006 Dr. Garner was trained as an Experimental Psychologist specializing in research design and statistical analysis. Since graduating in 2006, Dr. Garner has focused his program of implementation research on improving the implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs) for substance use disorders. To date, Dr. Garner has been the Principal Investigator (PI) of six NIH-funded research grants.
Arthur Blume, PhD.
Art Blume, PhD, is an American Indian (Cherokee and Choctaw) member of the American Psychological Association who investigates substance abuse and how to intervene upon it in culturally appropriate ways. He earned his PhD in clinical psychology at the University of Washington in Seattle, and while in the program, was part of the Journey of the Circles (a Native American substance abuse intervention program) research team, worked at Indian Child Welfare Services on the Tulalip Reservation during clinical practicum, and spent part of his clinical internship year at the Seattle Indian Health Board. He is currently professor of psychology at Washington State University.

She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
