This article is a systematic review and meta-analysis that investigated the effectiveness of different psychosocial interventions for people living with HIV (PLWH) and mental health problems. Additionally, characteristics that may influence the effectiveness of a treatment (e.g., treatment duration, type of provider) were studied. Depression, anxiety, quality of life, and psychological well-being were investigated as treatment outcome measures.
This course is based on the reading-based online article, The Benefits of Psychosocial Interventions for Mental Health in People Living With HIV-A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis created by Dr. Nadia Garnefski, Philip Spinhoven, PhD, and Sanne van Luenen, PhD in 2018.

Dr. Nadia Garnefski
Nadia Garnefski is Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical Psychology of Leiden University, The Netherlands. Her work at the University consists of a combination of research, teaching and management tasks. She also works as a therapist at a private mental health care practice. She is author of several self-help books and an online self-help program and has had he research published in peer reviewed journals.
Philip Spinhoven, PhD
Dr. Spinhoven is a Professor of Clinical Psychology, Institute of Psychology and Department of Psychiatry, Leiden University. His research focuses on how distant, recent and current stressors interact with cognitive processes (e.g., attention, memory, thought, reasoning), behavioural processes (e.g., approach and avoidance), and biological processes. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Sanne van Luenen, PhD
Sanne van Luenen is a postdoctoral researcher at the Clinical Psychology Unit,Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands. She is interested in the online treatment of mental health problems and has been published in peer reviewed journals.
L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
