About the Course

The legalization of marijuana in some areas has led to a shift in the perception of its harmfulness. In this webinar, viewers will receive valuable information and resources to help prevent youth marijuana use in their communities. Dr. Einstein will discuss the research on brain development and results of the recent surveys of drug use. Gisela Rots will talk about different prevention programs and the goals of these programs while Steve Fiala focuses on how Oregon has addressed prevention with the legalization of marijuana.

Dr. Emily Einsten

Dr. Einstein joined the Science Policy Branch, Office of Science Policy and Communications as Health Science Policy Analyst in January 2015. On the SPB team, Dr. Einstein develops materials to communicate the science of addictive drugs and substance use disorders to members of the public, the scientific community, and the government, with an emphasis on prescription opioids and heroin.

Gisela Rots

Gisela is a trainer at the Center for Application of Prevention Technologies.

Steven Fiala, MPH

Steven Fiala is a Senior Research Analyst with Program Design and Evaluation Services in the Oregon Public Health Division. He has worked at the Oregon Public Health Division for over six years with a primary focus on tobacco prevention research and evaluation. His recent research interests include studying the impacts of marijuana legalization and evaluating the implementation of public health

Sandi Cardaman is a Licensed Mental Health counselor who has been working in the field for more than 20 years. In that time she has worked as a counselor and provided supervision to interns. Sandi has worked with clients struggling with anger management, domestic violence, eating disorders and mood disorders as well as those dealing with the dependency system.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Describe adolescent brain development as it relates to drug use.
  2. List at least three prevention programs that can be used with adolescents.
  3. Identify how perception of harm impacts prevention efforts.
