About the Course:

This article provides up to date guidance regarding some of the more frequently asked questions about when it is appropriate under the Privacy Rule for a health care provider to share the protected health information of a patient who is being treated for a mental health condition.

  1. Identify and describe HIPAA privacy rules and the sharing of information related to mental health.

  2. Recognize and describe HIPAA Privacy Rules as they apply to public health authorities’ access to protected health information.

  3. Apply HIPAA Privacy Rules establishing the conditions under which protected health information may be used or disclosed by covered entities for research purpose.

  4. Apply HIPAA Privacy Rules as they apply to emergancy situations, health information technology, health coverage discrimination based on genetic information, and HIPAA privacy rules regarding same-sex marriage.
