The Developmental Dynamics of Youth Violence (Chapter 3): Youth Violence: A Report of the Surgeon General proclaims that most violence begins in the second decade of life. This chapter looks closely at childhood and adolescence as critical periods of development to trace how violence unfolds—its onset, duration, and continuity into adulthood. It also examines violence in relation to other risky behaviors that emerge in adolescence. The dynamics of youth violence are best understood from a development perspective, which recognizes that patterns of behavior change over the life course.

Course Objectives:

  1. Explain the developmental dynamics of youth violence.

  2. Describe the difference between early- and late-onset trajectories while considering the onset and cumulative prevalence of serious violence.

  3. Elaborate about the rates of offending and violent careers, the developmental pathway to violence, chronic violent offenders, and understand the concept of superpredators.

  4. Identify the correlation of co-occurring problems and criminal behavior, offending and victimization, and the young peoples’ transition to adulthood.
