The Child Survivor is a clinically rich, comprehensive overview of the treatment of children and adolescents who have developed dissociative symptoms in response to ongoing developmental trauma. Joyanna Silberg, a widely respected authority in the field, uses case examples to illustrate hard-to-manage clinical dilemmas such as children presenting with rage reactions, amnesia, and dissociative shut-down. Participants will be able to identify the various known psychological and neurological effects of developmental trauma.
Participants will be able to describe how dissociation can be explained by an integration of other known theories of the human mind.
Participants will be able to describe specific methods for accessing the survival based, i.e. self protective meaning of the presenting symptoms of traumatized children.
Participants will be able to identify the Five Classes of Symptoms Related to Dissociation and their various manifestations.
Participants will be able to identify Silberg's five basic treatment principles and the tenets describing the nature of a strong therapeutic relationship with the traumatized child.
Participants will be able to describe the concepts intrinsic to Silberg's EDUCATE model of psychotherapy with traumatized children.
Participants will be able to delineate a variety of methods to facilitate awareness of dissociated aspects of the traumatized child.
Participants will be able to describe specific methods of counteracting amnesia for events, behaviors, and traumatic memories.
Participants will be able to identify specific somatically based methods of achieving physiological regulation in traumatized children.
Participants will be able to identify specific strategies to disrupt and subsequently prevent states of extreme dissociative absorption in traumatized children.
Participants will be able to identify how to teach affect identification and regulation in the service of consolidating healthy attachments in traumatized children.
Participants will be able to identify strategies to help families learn to reinforce and facilitate healthy changes in their traumatized children.
