About the Course:

This course surveys characteristics of flourishing families and common mistakes languishing families make. Participants will learn a taxonomy of character strengths, how to identify each family member’s core strengths, and see examples of strengths in action. Participants will learn how to facilitate the construction of a Family Charter which can be incorporated in an individualized family treatment and recovery plan to measure outcomes of interventions.

Daniel Trussell, Ph.D., MBA, LPC, NCC is a positive psychology family coach, licensed professional counselor and national certified counselor with over 35 years experience as a helping professional. He held various clinical and senior executive positions in managed care, non profit and governmental agencies and is former Director of Community Mental Health for the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health.

This course is recommended for health care professionals; especially psychologists, counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about incorporating principles of applied positive psychology and strengths based counseling in a family therapy setting. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

  1. Identify 18 attributes of flourishing families and 7 mistakes languishing families make.

  2. Describe the six universal virtues posited in Positive Psychology that lead to optimal family functioning.

  3. Examine characteristics of 24 individual character strengths assigned to each of the virtues.

  4. Develop a methodology to construct a Family Charter that includes all 5 essential components
