This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, and social workers who seek knowledge about trauma and co-occurring disorders among youth. It is appropriate for introductory to immediate levels of participants’ knowledge.

Course Objectives:

  1. Explain prevalence of trauma and co-occurring disorders among youth, and show understanding of adolescent development and traumatic stress in children and adolescents.

  2. Identify the substance use among youth as well as the connection between traumatic stress and substance abuse which include special populations and cultural competency.

  3. Understand the comprehensive systems of care, the process of screening and assessment, the necessity of evidence-based practices, and the importance of staff being able to manage stress and self-care.
