About the Course:

This course is based on a National Cancer Institute publication designed to help teens who are dealing the cancer of a parent. It will help professionals identify areas to address with adolescent clients who have a parent with cancer. Information presented includes facts about cancer and treatments for cancer, changes that are likely to occur in families where a parent has cancer, and ways to take care of the self and find support. Suggestions are also presented for obtaining additional information in order to become as informed as possible.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about ways to assist adolescents who have a parent with cancer. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

Course Objectives:

  1. Identify ways to help teens prepare for and cope with life stresses resulting from having a parent with cancer.

  2. Be able to assist teens in their efforts to learn about cancer, how it is treated, and the professionals involved in the many aspects of care.

  3. Describe ways teens can be of assistance to a parent who has cancer.
