About the Course

Publishing your scientific paper in the International Journal of Eating Disorders (IJED) is just the first step in disseminating your research to a wider audience of diverse stakeholders. Science is a global public good and the ultimate goal of works published in the IJED is to improve the health and wellbeing of the community we serve. In addition, academic promotions and research funding decisions increasingly depend on having a high citation count. In this webinar, two IJED editors have teamed up with early career scholars in the eating disorders field to discuss both traditional and cutting-edge ways of enhancing the discoverability of your scientific work. First, we will discuss important considerations in crafting the title, abstract, and keywords of your paper for maximum discoverability online. Second, we will discuss how to create an eye-catching graphical abstract. Lastly, we will discuss best practices for disseminating your work on multiple social media platforms (e.g., Twitter, Instagram). The format will be a series of very brief slide presentations followed by an informal conversation. Dr. Weissman will highlight the importance of discoverability. Dr. Thomas will present on title, abstract and keywords. Dr. Harshman will discuss how to create a graphical abstract. Lastly, Drs. Haynos and Reilly and Ms. Coniglio will discuss social media. We will welcome questions from the live audience at the conclusion of the panel.

Kelly L. Klump, PhD

Kelly Klump is pioneering research that is changing people’s mindsets about the causes of eating disorders. It has been long believed that eating disorders were the result of psychosocial and cultural risk factors that often peak in women during puberty. Kelly has discovered that those factors alone do not cause these serious disorders. She has found that genetics plays a significant role in the development of eating disorders. As a result of groundbreaking research, she is closer to understanding why these disorders occur and how biology may interact with cultural risk factors. At its roots, Kelly’s work is dedicated to giving young women the best opportunity to fulfill a happy, healthy life. Kelly is an MSU Foundation Professor in the Psychology Department at Michigan State University. She co-founded the Michigan State University Twin Registry, a population-based twin registry that includes over 25,000 twins.
