The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

On Saturday, July 16, 2022, the U.S. transitioned the 10-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to 988.

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline offers 24/7 call, text and chat access to trained crisis counselors. The hotline is designed to help people experiencing suicidal thoughts, substance use or mental health crisis or any other kind of emotional distress. The hotline is also a resource for those who may be worried about a loved one who needs crisis support.

VA administers the Veterans Crisis Line through the 988 number. Veterans and their loved ones can now Dial 988 then Press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line. The 10-digit Lifeline number 1-800-273-TALK (8255) will continue to be operational after July 16 and will route calls to 988 indefinitely. Veterans, service members, and their families can also still reach the Veterans Crisis Line with the current phone number 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1, or by chat or text to 838255.
