  • New York Psychologists

Starting January 1, 2021, in order to register and practice the profession, each psychologist, licensed under the Education Law, must complete 36 hours of CE from a Department approved provider during each triennial registration period.

Self-study limitations – Self-study activities are provided through various media but do not allow the learner to contact the instructor in real-time with questions and/or comments. The Education Law and Commissioner’s Regulations allow a licensed psychologist to complete no more than one-third of the required hours as self-study in each registration period. This would translate to a limit of 12 hours for a typical 36-month registration period.

For a registration period other than 36 months only one-third of the total hours may be self study. But see below for exceptions to this.

3 of the 36 credits must be in ethics.
Please note: We do not currently offer an ethics course that meets NY state standards, however according to New York State, the ethics course is not needed during the phase in period.

For those licensees whose registrations are due to renew March 1, 2020 – July 1, 2022, all 36 credit hours may be earned with See this blog post for more information .
