About the Course

This course examines major principles of creating and maintaining healthy interpersonal boundaries with clients. Topics covered include the client’s perspective, the therapist’s perspective, issues in supervision, facilitating group therapy, and specialty issues such as forensic psychology and substance abuse counseling.

Barbara Herlihy, Ph.D. has served as chair of the ACA Ethics Committee, and is coauthor with Gerald Corey of the _ACA Ethical Standards Casebook_, 5th ed. as well as _Dual Relationships in Counseling_. Gerald Corey, EdD. is a well-known and highly-respected author of many counseling textbooks.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors and social workers, who seek knowledge about therapist/client boundaries. It is appropriate for introductory to intermediate level professionals.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Clearly understand what are considered to be appropriate and ethical sexual boundaries, as well as non-sexual boundaries, between the practitioner and clients.
  2. Accurately discuss the complexities of a variety of multiple relationships between practitioners and clients as well as supervisors and supervisees.
  3. Explain some of the ethical issues that arise in the context of group counseling, counseling within a community, and counseling with special populations.
