About the Course

The devastating impact of substance abuse on Amercan Indians and Alaska Natives is reviewed with an emphasis on psychologcial and physical effects. Comorbidity of substance, trans-generational trauma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and depression among American Indians and Alaska Natives is also discussed since each condition may cause, impact, and/or exacerbate the others. The Medicine Wheel, one respected and accepted treatment approach developed by American Indian and Alaska Native communities, is described in detail since it helps address all of the comorbid issues discussed. NOTE: (pg. 67-85)

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about substance abuse on Amercan Indians and Alaska Natives. It is appropriate for intermediate to advanced levels of participants' knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. describe the potential for comorbidity of substance abuse, transgenerational trauma, PTSD, and depression among American Indians and Alaska Natives and the psychological/physiological effects of such comorbidity.
  2. describe the Medicine Wheel and some of its potential uses in addressing the comorbid conditions.
