With the advent of social media, new realities have surfaced. There is a dire need to support continued attention and education to ensure positive mental health outcomes and well-being for those engaging in social media use. For children, adolescents, and even adult populations key considerations should be taken to ensure that safety measures are taken to prevent online predation, exploitation, harassment, and cyberbullying. This webinar will discuss the prevalence, predictors, and cautions of adverse social media experiences among vulnerable populations. A special focus will be placed on children, adolescents, older adults, and populations with lifelong disabilities. Information and strategies concerning safety will be discussed with a special focus on how to work with consumers and their families to promote safe outcomes when engaging in social media use.
This course is based on the recorded webinar, Social Media Safety: Key Considerations for Professionals Supporting Clients and Consumers Across the Lifespan created by Christina Marsack-Topolewski, Ph.D., LMSW et al. in 2025.
Dr. Christina Marsack-Topolewski is an associate professor of Social Work in the College of Health and Human Services at Eastern Michigan University. Dr. Marsack-Topolewski received her PhD in Social Work with a dual title in Gerontology from Wayne State University. She has worked with individuals with various intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) for 20 years. Her research focuses on individuals with autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities, their caregivers, advance care planning, the service delivery model, and service utilization. She has over 80 publications in national and international journals and encyclopedias, mainly focusing on individuals with IDDs, caregiving, as well as services and supports. In addition, she has presented her work locally, nationally, and internationally.

Identify specific mental health and wellness realities for those that are subject to cyberbullying, exploited, or abused online.
Recognize and be aware of populations that are particularly vulnerable for online safety challenges.
Employ strategies and resources to support clients and their families to prevent, mitigate, or address online safety issues and concerns.
