When a client discloses allegations of abuse to the clinician there can be a complex situation. The clinician is not a judge and jury. Treatment is confidential and private. However, disclosures bring in the world outside the consulting room which the client and clinician share. When newspapers and television focus on an allegation, similar to the client’s, which is disproved in court there can be a major detrimental clinical impact on the treatment. Using a British example to illustrate this problem, the presentation will examine the clinical consequences of media involvement in the consulting room.
