About the Course

In 2013 Binge Eating Disorder (BED) reached full diagnostic status in the DSM-5. Since then there has been major research into its epidemiology, burden and treatment. BED is now known to be a highly prevalent eating disorder accompanied by substantial impairment, and comorbidity. This symposium brings together leading researchers into BED presenting new and recent data addressing major questions: How common is BED world-wide? What is its global distribution and burden across the lifespan? What is the clinical utility of pharmacological treatment and their role when most guidelines recommend psychological therapy as first-line? Workshop attendees will receive a comprehensive understanding of the epidemiology of BED and the role of medication in the context of other evidence–based treatments of BED. The workshop will include key reviews of BED epidemiology worldwide; including a national survey from Canada, the first general population studies of costs of BED in Australia, and a current Brazilian representative population-based household survey of 2,500 individuals – to our knowledge the first major survey of DEM-5 BED in a developing country and treatments. The workshop will present the evidence supporting the efficacy of pharmacotherapy for BED; with around 30 published placebo randomized controlled trials utilizing antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs), anticonvulsants and psychostimulants. However, their integration in clinical practice with first line psychological therapies is less well developed. A treatment algorithm for pharmacotherapy and their use with will be presented with attendee exercises on its application to clinical scenarios. The workshop will close with open debate and a panel discussion.
