About the Course:

The purpose of this presentation is to consider Family Based Therapy as an effective approach to treating anorexia and bulimia, with a specific focus on the role of the carer. With recent developments in clinical knowledge and resources for eating disorder sufferers as well as attitudinal changes towards eating disorder illnesses, the evidence that a gap between provider of care and recipient still exists and as such impedes the recovery process as well as the experience of those part of this process. Through a preliminary literature review the lived experience of a parent coping with a child undergoing treatment for eating disorder will be examined. Carer encounters with health professionals and a prescription for improved therapeutic communication between carers, and healthcare workers within the framework of a family-based approach will be explored in relation to carer’s experience. With the goal of achieving better outcomes for the patient in treatment, as evidenced by healthy body weight and coping mechanisms, the quality of the sufferer’s support network matters. To that end, an understanding of the limitations of carer’s experience during FBT needs to be comprehensively understood and applied in such therapies as to maintain standards across regions and optimise recovery. Reducing recovery timeframes for the sufferer and improving the experience of the care process for the carer are fundamental considerations for all involved in patients’ recovery from eating disorders. As such, reduction in carer fatigue and increased resilience and empowerment through engagement with Family Based Therapy professionals are recommended goals and measurable targets. This workshop seeks not only determines these key factors but to call them to be reported on and accounted for in a more uniform manner that reflects contemporary approaches to healthcare in general.
