About the Course

Accurate assessment of eating behaviors are critical to help inform clinical decision making. However, most eating disorder assessments have been developed and evaluated in samples of predominantly Caucasian females, which presents challenges for clinicians when trying to assess eating pathology and how it may present differently for clients from diverse backgrounds. This interactive workshop will present recent advances in eating disorders assessment in diverse populations including males, Latinx, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer populations. Specific measures to be discussed (30 minutes each) include: 1) muscularity-oriented eating test (MOET): a novel measure published in 2019 of muscularity-oriented disordered eating attitudes and behaviors (presenter: Dr. Stuart Murray); 2) Spanish language versions of the Eating Disorders Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) and Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI) which have recently been validated in Argentina (presenter: Dr. Emilio Compte), and 3) unique considerations for the EDE-Q among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer populations based on recent EDE-Q norms data from The PRIDE Study, a population-based study of LGBTQ+ people (presenter: Dr. Jason Nagata). For each measure, there will be a didactic presentation of the rationale, question items, and psychometric properties. Then participants will have the opportunity to practice using the measure in pairs/small groups and discuss how to apply and use these measures in their own clinical practice. A group discussion and question and answer session will then follow (moderator: Dr. Tiffany Brown).

This course is based on the video, Advances in Eating Disorders Assessment in Diverse Populations: Males, Cross-cultural, and LGBTQ+ Populations created by Emilio Compte, PhD, Stuart Murray, PhD, and Jason Nagata, PhD in 2020.
