About the Course:
This course presents a potpourri of therapeutic techniques that are not based on any particular theoretical orientation but evolved over the years from the author’s clinical experience. These techniques are not complete interventions but brief strategies that are handy tools for therapists. The course is not organized by diagnosis because these versatile techniques can address a wide range of clinical issues that crosscut disorders. There are strategies for helping clients to: (1) develop new routes to their existing goals, (2) transport adaptive mental states into problem situations, (3) understand the neurobiology underlying their difficulties, (4) utilize non-verbal modes of thinking and planning by using diagrams, (5) construct personal narratives that are both realistic and optimistic, (6) develop more adaptive structures of meaning, and (7) overcome fear of failure. Throughout, the emphasis is on clear, step-by-step instruction in using these innovative techniques.
This course is based on chapter 8 of the book, Child and Adolescent Therapy: Science and Art, 2nd Edition created by Jeremy Shapiro in 2015.
