About the Course:

Neuropsychological assessment methods have identified the earliest, most definitive cognitive and behavioral symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease; this has allowed for the identification, staging, and tracking of the disease. This article focuses on the pathognomonic neuropsychological characteristics of dementia stemming from Alzheimer’s disease versus “normal,” age-related cognitive decline and from dementia caused by other neurodegenerative diseases.

This course is based on the reading-based online, The Neuropsychological Profile of Alzheimer Disease created by Sandra Weintraub, PhD in 2012.

Dr. Weintraub is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (Psychology) and Neurology – Ken and Ruth Davee Department at Northwestern University. Her clinical and research interests focus on Individuals with Primary Progressive Aphasia, Frontotemporal Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. and her research projects address the neuropsychological, neuroimaging and neuropathological variables associated with these syndromes, in order to contribute to our understanding of risk and the genetic factors that determine regional brain vulnerability to these diseases and to identify biomarkers that can be used in diagnosis during the patient’s lifetime.

Keith Gibson, Ph.D.

Dr. Gibson is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years in research, clinical and consulting practice. He has also held leadership roles in research administration and program evaluation and more recently has specialized in program evaluation and system analysis. He draws upon his years of expertise as a practicing psychologist, administrator, researcher and technologist to help universities evaluate their programs to implement, meet, and maintain CACREP standards.

Recommended For:

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers who work with Alzheimer’s patients and older populations. It is appropriate for participants’ at the intermediate level of knowledge or above.

  2. Discuss the visuospatial deficits commonly observed in Alzheimer’s disease.

  3. Identify characteristics distinquishing Alzheimer’s disease from other causes of dementia.
