About the Course

Bipolar disorder is a major mood disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of depression and and mania/hypomania, and is typically associated with functional impairment. Treatment for this— and other conditions— are both enhanced and hindered by the state of evidence based care. This study focuses on a qualitative study concerning the challenges people with bipolar disorder (BD) experience and examine what these challenges imply for health care and research needs.

This course is based on the article, The Challenges of Living with Bipolar Disorder: A Qualitative Study of the Implications for Health Care and Research created by Eva F Maassen, MD, MSc et al. in 2018.

Dr. Regeer is a psychiatrist at an Outpatient Clinic for Bipolar Disorders in the Netherlands. She has published more than 25 articles covering her work on bipolar disorder.

Dr. Gibson is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years in research, clinical and consulting practice. He has also held leadership roles in research administration and program evaluation and more recently has specialized in program evaluation and system analysis. He draws upon his years of expertise as a practicing psychologist, administrator, researcher and technologist to help universities evaluate their programs to implement, meet, and maintain CACREP standards.

  2. Identify the four domains of recovery identified by the authors of the present study.
  3. Describe the salient qualitative results of the study.
