About the Course:

Culture has long been recognized as playing a key role in the process of helping. Notably within the context of grief, culture would be viewed as a key influencing factor for fully appreciating one’s experience of loss. The often complex experience of loss and subsequent grief can create a myriad of cultural expressions, behaviors, and rituals. Often these cultural encounters may be misinterpreted, overlooked, or can even pose ethical challenges for helping professionals. This workshop will explore a framework for understanding culture, best practices with culturally diverse populations, and challenging ethical encounters in honoring diversity. This workshop will examine the unique role that culture plays in the experience of grief and will offer practical guidelines for honoring diversity while balancing ethics and best practices.

This course is based on the , Balancing Ethics & Best Practices: Honoring Cultural Diversity in the Grieving Process created by Sandra A Lopez, LCSW, ACSW in 2017.
