About the Course:

The Mindful Way through Anxiety provides a roadmap for those hoping to break free from the struggle with anxiety and improve life satisfaction. Based on over 10 years of research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the authors describe a program of self-reflection, writing and mindfulness practices aimed at reducing stress, worry, anxiety and inaction. With clarity and compassion, the authors describe clinically tested strategies for increasing emotional awareness, openness and engagement in personally meaningful life activities.

Lizabeth Roemer, Ph.D.

Dr. Lizabeth Roemer is Professor of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts Boston in Boston, MA.
Both authors each have published over 75 journal articles and book chapters and together they have edited two books and co-authored Mindfulness- and acceptance-based behavioral therapies in practice and The mindful way through anxiety. Drs. Orsillo and Roemer have developed an acceptance-based behavioral therapy for generalized anxiety and comorbid disorders and are currently examining its efficacy and mediators and moderators of change in a study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.Free audio downloads of mindfulness exercises plus other resources are available at the authors website,

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors, social workers and nurses who seek knowledge about dealing with anxiety from an evidence-based mindfulness, behavioral perspective. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

Course Objectives:

  1. Identify ways in which responses and reactions to anxiety compound distress and lead to behavioral avoidance.

  2. Recognize subtle avoidance strategies and understand how they diminish quality of life.

  3. Identify and implement mindfulness practices that can increase awareness and decrease avoidance.

  4. Apply mindfulness practices to help clients clarify emotions and increase acceptance and willingness.

  5. Formulate ways to help clients articulate their values and engage in values consistent actions.
