About the Course

Forni, P.M., Ph.D.
Dr. P.M. Forni teaches civility and Italian literature at Johns Hopkins University. He is the co-founder of The Johns Hopkins Civility Project (1997 – 2000). His series of commentaries, Speaking of Manners, is aired by the National Public Radio-affiliate station in Baltimore. Among the media outlets that have reported on his work on civility are _The New York Times_, _The Washington Post_, _The Times of London_, the BBC and CNN. He lives with his wife Virginia in Baltimore, Maryland.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about how civility may be defined and ways in which people are impacted psychologically, ethically, and otherwise by civility (or lack thereof) in their lives. It is appropriate for all levels of participants' knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Summarize the goals the author would like readers to consider regarding the importance of civility and ethics in daily life.
  2. Define civility and how it relates to relationships, respect, love, ethics, and behavioral science.
  3. Identify the first fourteen rules of civility described and explain how they apply to interactions among people.
  4. Identify rules 15-25 as described by the author and critique their relevance to ethical clinical work with patients/clients.
  5. Explain how the author views civility in terms of ethical individualism and contemporary society.
