About the Course:

One of the greatest strengths of those who help others is the ability to see life from the perspective of the other, to empathize. Yet there is often an unspoken struggle taking place within the helper between altruism and self-preservation. This course encourages practitioners to nurture their own lives by giving clear explanations of practitioner stress and providing remedies that can be implemented. Dr. Thomas M. Skovholt is the author of several books on therapist self-care and the counseling process. His main research focus at University of Missouri is practitioner development in the helping, teaching and healing professions with a concentration on counselors and therapists. Topics within this area include mastery and expertise, resiliency development and burnout prevention, struggles of the novice practitioner, clinical supervision, the counseling process and helping skills.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about practitioner burnout and self-care. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

Course Objectives:

  1. Determine the optimal balance between “other-care” and “self-care” and demonstrate how one acquires this balance.

  2. Identify the joys and hazards of the work and describe the long road from novice to senior practitioner.

  3. Evaluate the possible causes and essence of practitioner burnout.

  4. Plan ways to maintain the professional and personal self by listing methods experts use to maintain vitality in their work.

  5. Formulate an individual self-care action plan.
