About the Course:

This book describes a concise and up-to-date treatment program for insomnia intended for a range of health care providers. In a user-friendly manner it provides empirically-derived and clinically useful treatment procedures, comprising a cost-effective program that can be applied to large numbers of adults with insomnia. This program fits readily into managed care (U.S.) and local health co-operative systems (U.K.), particularly as it offers an alternative to pharmacotherapy.

Chapters cover an introduction to sleep and its disturbance, as well as clear-cut assessment and treatment approaches. Most of the chapters are formatted for consistency and provide regular features in addition to the descriptive text, including clinical vignettes, a checklist of learning outcomes for the clinician, and recommendations for further reading on a given topic. Where applicable, assessment materials are reproduced and interpretation criteria provided. Additional features include guidance notes for the therapist in conducting each session, worksheets for patients to complete, and implementation criteria to increase patient compliance. For maximum convenience to the clinician the book comes with a CD containing materials that can be reproduced and customized for use in the assessment and treatment process.

Charles Morin is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the Univeristé Laval in Quebec City. He completed his graduate studies in clinical psychology and post-doctoral training in sleep medicine. From 1986 to 1994 he served on the faculty of the Medical College of Virginia and headed the Insomnia Treatment Program. A Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, he has been conducting clinical research and treating sleep disorders patients for the past 20 years. His research program on insomnia is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Dr. Morin has published over 100 papers and book chapters.<p> Colin Espie is Professor of Clinical Psychology, Director of the Sleep Research Laboratory, and Chair of the Sackler Institute of Psychobiological Research at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He completed graduate studies in clinical psychology followed by a research doctorate investigating the treatment of insomnia. He has worked both in the National Health Service in the UK and in academic departments, holding senior posts as an NHS Clinical Director of Services (1989 – 1995), and Chair of the Department of Psychological Medicine, University of Glasgow (1995 – 2002). He was appointed Full Professor in 1995. Dr. Espie’s research over the past 20 years has focused upon clinically effective treatment of insomnia and investigations of critical mechanisms in insomnia development. He also has a research program on psychosocial aspects of epilepsy. Dr. Espie serves on editorial boards of six international journals, and has published over 100 papers and book chapters, and two books on insomnia. He has served on the committee of the British Sleep Society and is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society.</p>
