The booklet upon which this course is based was reviewed by health professionals and, most important, by parents of children with cancer. Although this booklet does not tell you everything about cancer in children, it is a start, and it directs you to other sources of information. You may want to share this booklet with clients/patients who want to learn more about what to expect they will go through. Use this booklet to learn:

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about helping parents cope with their child’s cancer and help their child cope in the process. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

Course Objectives:

1. Explain what happens when a child is diagnosed with cancer and ways to talk with that child regarding the diagnosis.

2. Identify forms of cancer treatment, their potential side effects, and ways to ease a child’s fears concerning treatment.

3. Describe common medical procedures and potential health issues related to cancer and its treatment.

4. Evaluate and apply information presented regarding moving on with life after a child has been diagnosed with cancer.

5. Name resources available to parents with children who have cancer and utilize those resources with clients/patients as warranted.
