The specific goals of these guidelines are to provide practitioners with (1) a frame of reference for the treatment of lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients, and (2) basic information and further references in the areas of assessment, intervention, identity, relationships, and the education and training of psychologists. These guidelines build on the American Psychological Association’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (APA, 1992),2 other policies of the APA, and policies of other mental health organizations.

About the Authors:

These guidelines were developed by the Division 44 / Committee on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Concerns Joint Task Force on Guidelines for Psychotherapy with Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Clients (JTF). They were adopted by the Council of Representatives on February 26, 2000. The JTF co-chairs were Kristin Hancock, PhD (John F. Kennedy University, Orinda, California) and Armand Cerbone, PhD (independent practice, Chicago, Illinois).

This course is recommended for social workers, counselors, psychologists, and other human services and behavioral health professionals who seek knowledge about guidelines for psychotherapists working with lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients. It is appropriate for participants with intermediate to advanced levels of knowledge about the topic.

Course Objectives:

  1. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of psychotherapy guidelines related to attitudes about homosexuality and bisexuality.

  2. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of psychotherapy guidelines related to relationship and family issues for lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons.

  3. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of psychotherapy guidelines related to lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients and issues of diversity.

  4. Identify and demonstrate knowledge of psychotherapy guidelines as they relate to necessary education about lesbian, gay and bisexual issues.
